What's On - Sewing and Quilting Classes in Gloucestershire

Throughout the year, I run short courses, one-day classes and workshops for anyone who can already use a sewing machine and knows their way around the basics. Everything from bag making to Free Motion Quilting, and lots in between. You don't need to be advanced, just confident with your machine, since workshop days move at a pace that doesn't leave time to start from zero. These change regularly, so there's always something new to try.

The following courses are now open for enrolment:
Starts 7pm Monday January 4th 2027

Beginners Free Motion Quilting Course

January 2027
ENROLMENT OPENING SOON
Every January, I run two of my best-loved courses, designed for absolute beginners:

Beginners Sewing - for anyone who's never touched a sewing machine in their life (or last touched one 50 years ago at school), and is more than a little terrified but really wants to learn to sew.
Beginners Patchwork & Quilting - a full course for those ready to make their first quilt from scratch, starting from nothing.

These are the only two courses where I teach you to sew from scratch; everything else on this page is for confident beginners and beyond.

If there's nothing here that takes your fancy just yet, or you'd rather hear about new dates the moment they open for booking, often before I even put them on the website, that's exactly what my newsletter is for:

You will also receive my weekly newsletter - I promise it's a nice end to the week every Friday. All your data is secure and I never sell, share or doing anything nefarious with your details.

Prefer to learn at your own pace, on your own project, with my full attention for the whole session? I also teach privately, one to one (in person or via video call) - whether you're a complete beginner wanting to start gently, or you already sew and want focused help moving a specific skill or project forward.

One to one adult sewing and quilting tuition costs £60 per hour, or £100 for two continuous hours. Gift vouchers are available if you're looking for a gift.

Sewing & Quilting Lessons For Children
I also teach children to sew - one to one, or in small groups during the school holidays. It's such a lovely thing to pass on, and I love seeing kids build real confidence with a sewing machine.

For your confidence, I have an Enhanced DBS Certificate which are welcome to ask to see.

Not Local, or Prefer to Learn From Home?

In-person isn't the only way to learn with me - I also teach online, so you can go at your own pace from wherever you are.

Meet Your Teacher

There's something wonderful about a room full of people, chatting, laughing, and sewing beautiful fabric together, with a cuppa close by. It's a lovely way to spend an evening, a day, or a weekend. If you're local, it's a brilliant way to learn face to face. And if you're not, plenty of my students make a weekend of it: a fun sewing getaway, just for them....

...This is Quilt With Kim in person: real workshops, real classes, held right here in Newent, Gloucestershire.

I've been sewing for over 45 years and hold a City & Guilds qualification in Patchwork & Quilting. I love nothing more than helping sewists feel confident and capable - whether that's someone picking up a needle for the very first time, or you are ready to try something new to stretch your skills a little further.

I've taught hundreds of people to sew and quilt through my in-person classes, online courses and my YouTube channel, Quilt With Kim, which has had over 850,000 views. I'm also a guest presenter on Sewing Street TV. And yes, that goes out live 🎥.

My classes and workshops are always warm, practical, friendly and judgement-free - with clear explanations, plenty of encouragement, and definitely a few laughs along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need previous sewing experience?

It depends which course. My two January beginners' courses (Beginners Sewing and Beginners Patchwork & Quilting) are designed for absolute beginners in those topics. Every other workshop and short course on this page is aimed at confident beginners and above; you'll need to already be comfortable using a sewing machine, as workshop days move at a pace that doesn't allow time to teach machine basics from scratch.

Do I need my own sewing machine?

Yes, you'll need to bring your own machine for most workshops (each workshop or class page will tell you exactly what you need to bring. I do have a couple of machines to hire for a class for a minimal fee of £10 for a one day workshop, or £5 a lesson if it's a course.

What if there's nothing on the page right now?

My workshops and short courses rotate throughout the year, so it's always worth checking back - or better still, join the newsletter and you'll hear about new dates before they even go live here.

Where exactly are classes held?

Classes take place at either Newent Community Pavilion in Newent, Gloucestershire or at my home in rural Kempley, Gloucestershire. Newent Pavilion is fully accessible with free parking on site. However, the venue can be changed so please make sure you read your emails with joining details or for any updates.

I'm not local - can I still come?

Absolutely. Plenty of students travel in and make a weekend of it and make a lovely sewing getaway, just for them. Please email me if you'd like details of local places to stay.

Can I do both online and in-person classes?

Many students do exactly that, maybe starting with an online course at home, then coming to a workshop for the hands-on, in-the-room experience (or the other way round).

How many people will be in the class?

Class sizes are always kept small, with a maximum of 8 people (4 if held at my home), so you'll get plenty of individual attention and support throughout the day.

Are your classes open to men?

Yes absolutely. Sewing is for everyone, and men are very welcome. You'll be made to feel right at home.

Are your classes LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Yes, 100%. My workshops are welcoming, inclusive spaces for everyone. Kindness, respect and support are at the heart of everything I do: sewing really is for anyone who wants to learn.

What's your cancellation policy?

Because places are limited, cancellations are based on how much notice you give. Please read the full Cancellation Policy here for details.
💬 If you have any accessibility needs, or you're unsure whether this workshop is right for you, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'll always do my best to help.
