Christmas in July? Why Quilters Start Celebrating Early

A cheerful illustration of a quilter wearing a Santa hat sewing a festive quilt outdoors under the summer sun. The scene blends Christmas motifs like holly and snowflakes with a bright blue sky and green grass, conveying the fun “Christmas in July” theme.
Have you ever wondered why there's a sudden flurry of festive fabrics in the middle of summer?

In the quilting world, "Christmas in July" isn't just a cutesy catchphrase – it's actually a smart way to set yourself up for a joyful, stress‑free holiday season (well, within reason...).

When I first started quilting I couldn't really understand why it went all festive in my local quilt shop. When I opened my own shop (now online) all became VERY clear. So here's why you probably want to be getting festive in the summer:
Fabrics arrive long before December

Quilt fabric manufacturers release their Christmas collections in June and July. Those gorgeous prints and advent‑calendar panels you love? They sell out fast once the holiday rush begins. Shopping early means you'll have your favourite fabrics in hand before they disappear, and you can support your local quilt shop or online retailers while stock is plentiful.

Early planning = stress‑free stitching

Once your Christmas fabric stash is sorted, you can start planning your festive makes without the time pressure of autumn (back to school / back to work / everything moves up a gear). Whether you dream of making tree skirts, table runners, quilted stockings or handmade gifts in your own stitched gift bags, July gives you breathing room to sketch ideas, gather supplies and map out a schedule that fits around your summer plans.

Practice makes perfect

Christmas in July is also a perfect excuse to experiment with techniques you've been itching to try. Want to master free‑motion quilting, curved piecing or appliqué? Practice now while there's no imminent deadline. A few years ago I decided to make a hat for Nige a couple of days before Christmas. Never again. It was a good hat though! (And, no, I'd never made that kind of hat before either, so I broke all the rules).

Starting early gives you time to enjoy the process and polish your skills.

Stash‑busting, eco‑friendly gift bags
If you've ever thought of ditching disposable wrapping, now's the moment to raid your stash and whip up reusable drawstring gift bags, bottle bags and pretty fabric pots and bowls. They're quick to make, eco‑friendly and always impress the recipient. You don't even need to stick to Christmas fabrics – raid your stash of large scraps, and you'll have a pile ready long before the first frosts arrive.
Start stitching now and avoid that autumn madness – you'll thank me come December!
So that's why "Christmas in July" has become a tradition in the quilting world. By shopping early, planning ahead, practising new techniques and making reusable gift bags, you'll breeze through the festive season feeling rather smug. Plus, mid‑summer sewing sessions are a glorious way to spend time out in your garden to admire your hard Spring and early summer gardening work. Just roll out a long extension lead, and don't choose a windy day!
