What Size Needle for Quilting Cotton?
What Size Needle Should You Use for Quilting Cotton?
If you've ever had your sewing machine needle snap mid-stitch, there's a good chance the needle was either the wrong type or the wrong size for the job. And if you're piecing quilting cotton, getting this right really does make a difference - both to your machine and to your results.
So let's keep this simple.

The needle size I recommend for quilting cotton
For most quilting cotton projects, I recommend either a size 70/10 or a size 80/12 universal needle OR a size 75/11 quilting needle.
If I had to pick just one for piecing, I'd go with the universal 80/12 — and here's why.
When you're piecing a quilt, you're rarely just stitching through two layers of fabric. Every time your seam line crosses over another seam, those layers build up and create bulk. A needle that's too fine simply isn't strong enough to push through that thickness without struggling - or snapping altogether.
On the other hand, too large a needle and it's rather like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The needle creates a bigger hole than the thread needs, and that's not what we want in our beautifully pressed patchwork!
Choose your needle not just for the fabric you're stitching, but for the project you're stitching too. Quilting involves multiple layers, and your needle needs to be up to the job.
So if you haven't already, switch to a universal 80/12 needle for piecing your quilting cotton. It's a small change that makes a surprisingly big difference: your machine will run more smoothly and your stitches will look so much better.
